How to Fix Zoom Not Working
Most Zoom problems are caused by permissions settings, an outdated app, or a weak internet connection rather than anything complex.
Likely causes
- Camera or microphone permission not granted
- Outdated Zoom app
- Another app using the camera simultaneously
- Weak WiFi connection
- Firewall blocking Zoom
- Audio device not selected correctly
Step-by-step fix
-
1
Update Zoom
Click your profile picture in Zoom โ Check for Updates. An outdated app causes most issues.
-
2
Check camera and microphone permissions
Windows: Settings โ Privacy โ Camera (and Microphone) โ make sure Zoom is allowed. Mac: System Settings โ Privacy & Security โ Camera.
-
3
Close other apps using the camera
Teams, Skype, or even browser tabs can lock the camera. Close all other video apps before opening Zoom.
-
4
Test audio and video before a call
In Zoom settings, click Audio and Video and run the test. Make sure the correct devices are selected in the dropdown menus.
-
5
Switch to a wired connection
If your call keeps freezing, plug your computer into your router with an ethernet cable for a more stable connection.
-
6
Allow Zoom through your firewall
Windows: search "Allow an app through Windows Firewall" and make sure Zoom is ticked for both Private and Public networks.
