How to Fix a Phone That Keeps Overheating
Phones generate heat during normal use, but excessive heat can damage the battery and processor. Here is how to identify the cause and fix it.
Likely causes
- Too many apps running in the background
- Screen brightness too high for extended periods
- Charging while using demanding apps or games
- Faulty or non-genuine charger
- Blocked air vents (thick case)
- Software bug or rogue app using excessive CPU
Step-by-step fix
-
1
Remove the case and let it cool
If your phone is hot, remove the case and place it on a flat, cool surface. Do not put it in the fridge โ rapid temperature change damages batteries.
-
2
Close all background apps
Swipe away all open apps. On iPhone double-press the Home button or swipe up. On Android use the Recent Apps button.
-
3
Check which app is using CPU
Android: Settings โ Battery โ Battery Usage. iPhone: Settings โ Battery. Look for apps using high percentages and delete or update them.
-
4
Turn off unused features
Turn off GPS, Bluetooth, and mobile data if you are not using them. These all generate heat when active.
-
5
Avoid charging and gaming simultaneously
Using demanding apps while charging dramatically increases heat. Charge with the screen off when possible.
-
6
Update your operating system
Software bugs can cause excessive CPU usage. Install any pending iOS or Android updates.
