How to Fix Internet That Keeps Dropping
Intermittent internet is one of the most frustrating tech problems. The cause is usually your router, your ISP line, or your device settings.
Likely causes
- Overheating router
- Loose or damaged phone line or cable
- ISP line fault or noise on the line
- Router firmware out of date
- Too many devices on the network
- Wireless interference
Step-by-step fix
-
1
Check your router is not overheating
Make sure your router is in an open space with airflow around it. Do not place it in a cupboard or stack things on top.
-
2
Check all cables
Make sure the phone line cable (for ADSL/FTTC) or ethernet cable is firmly connected at both ends. Try a replacement cable if available.
-
3
Run a line quality test
Log into your router admin panel (192.168.1.1) and look for line statistics. High "error rate" or low "SNR margin" indicates a line fault โ contact your ISP.
-
4
Update router firmware
Check your router manufacturer's site or admin panel for firmware updates and install them.
-
5
Use a wired connection to test
Plug your computer directly into the router with an ethernet cable. If it stays connected, the problem is with your WiFi, not the broadband line itself.
-
6
Contact your ISP
If drops continue, report a fault to your broadband provider. Ask them to run a line test remotely. In the UK you are entitled to a credit for extended outages.
