How to Fix Slow Broadband in the UK
Slow broadband can be caused by your router, your internal wiring, the time of day, or a genuine fault on your line. Here is how to diagnose and fix it.
Likely causes
- Router positioned poorly or in a cupboard
- Old or damaged phone line filter (ADSL)
- Peak-time congestion on your ISP network
- Interference from baby monitors or microwaves
- Old router not supporting modern speeds
- Line fault or noise
Step-by-step fix
-
1
Run a speed test at the right time
Visit fast.com or speedtest.net. Note your speed. Run it again at different times of day โ if speed is only slow in evenings, it is peak-time congestion.
-
2
Move your router
Place it centrally, off the floor, away from walls and other electronics. Never put it in a cupboard.
-
3
Plug directly into the master socket
Connect your router directly to the main BT master socket (the one where the phone line enters your home). This bypasses internal wiring that may be causing interference.
-
4
Replace your microfilter
If you are on ADSL or FTTC, make sure a microfilter is fitted on every phone socket in use. Replace old or cheap ones.
-
5
Use a wired ethernet connection
Connect your computer directly to the router with an ethernet cable and test again. WiFi always adds some speed loss.
-
6
Contact your ISP
If speeds are consistently below 50% of what you are paying for, you are entitled to request a line test in the UK. Ofcom rules give you the right to exit your contract if speeds are not met.
