How to Fix a Keyboard Not Working
A non-responsive keyboard is usually a quick software fix. Work through these steps before assuming hardware failure.
Likely causes
- Driver conflict after an update
- Filter Keys or Sticky Keys accidentally enabled
- Dirty or stuck keys
- Faulty USB connection
- Flat batteries (wireless keyboards)
- Physical liquid damage
Step-by-step fix
-
1
Restart your computer
The simplest fix. Keyboard drivers can become unresponsive after long sessions or updates.
-
2
Check Filter Keys is not enabled
Press the right Shift key for 8 seconds. If Filter Keys is on, Windows will prompt you. Go to Settings โ Accessibility โ Keyboard and turn Filter Keys off.
-
3
Check the connection
For USB keyboards, unplug and replug into a different port. For wireless keyboards, replace the batteries and re-pair the receiver.
-
4
Update or reinstall the keyboard driver
Device Manager โ Keyboards โ right-click โ Update driver. Or right-click โ Uninstall, restart, and let Windows reinstall automatically.
-
5
Test with an on-screen keyboard
Search "On-screen keyboard" in Windows. If the on-screen keyboard works, it is a hardware issue with the physical keyboard.
-
6
Clean the keyboard
Turn the keyboard upside down and gently tap to dislodge debris. Use compressed air to clean between keys.
