How to Fix a Computer That Keeps Freezing
A freezing computer is usually caused by overheating, insufficient RAM, failing storage, or a software conflict. These steps help you find and fix the cause.
Likely causes
- Overheating CPU or GPU
- Not enough RAM for the tasks being run
- Failing hard drive
- Malware consuming resources
- Outdated drivers
- Corrupted system files
Step-by-step fix
-
1
Check Task Manager during a freeze
Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc. If CPU or memory usage is near 100%, that is your culprit. Close the offending application.
-
2
Check the hard drive health
Download CrystalDiskInfo (free). If it shows a "Caution" or "Bad" status, your drive is failing and needs urgent replacement.
-
3
Clean the inside of your PC
Dust buildup causes overheating. Use compressed air to clean the fans and heatsinks. Ensure all vents are clear.
-
4
Run System File Checker
Open Command Prompt as Administrator โ type "sfc /scannow" and press Enter. This repairs corrupted Windows files.
-
5
Run a memory test
Search for "Windows Memory Diagnostic" and run it. A failing RAM stick will cause random freezes and crashes.
-
6
Perform a clean boot
Search "msconfig" โ Services tab โ check "Hide all Microsoft services" โ Disable all โ Restart. If freezing stops, a third-party startup program is the cause.
