How to Fix Xbox Not Connecting to WiFi
Xbox WiFi connection problems are usually caused by router settings, signal strength, or a simple network refresh.
Likely causes
- Router too far from the Xbox
- Router using a congested WiFi channel
- Xbox network settings corrupted
- Xbox DNS settings incorrect
- MAC address filtering on the router
Step-by-step fix
-
1
Restart the Xbox and router
Hold the Xbox power button for 10 seconds to fully power off. Turn off your router for 30 seconds. Power both back on.
-
2
Move the Xbox closer to the router
WiFi signal degrades through walls. Test with the Xbox next to the router to confirm signal is the issue.
-
3
Use a wired connection to test
Connect the Xbox directly to the router with an ethernet cable. If it works wired but not on WiFi, it is a signal or wireless settings issue.
-
4
Change the DNS settings
On Xbox: Settings โ General โ Network settings โ Advanced settings โ DNS settings โ Manual. Enter 8.8.8.8 (primary) and 8.8.4.4 (secondary).
-
5
Clear the MAC address
Settings โ General โ Network settings โ Advanced settings โ Alternate MAC address โ Clear. Restart.
-
6
Check NAT type
Settings โ General โ Network settings. Open NAT is best for gaming. Strict NAT causes connection issues. If Strict, your router may need UPnP enabled.
