How to Fix PlayStation Lag
PlayStation lag is either input lag (slow response from the TV/display) or network lag (high ping during online gaming). Here is how to fix both.
Likely causes
- TV in cinema/movie mode causing input lag
- WiFi signal interference or distance
- Router congestion from other devices
- PSN server issues
- MTU settings incorrectly configured
Step-by-step fix
-
1
Enable Game Mode on your TV
Go to your TV's picture settings and switch to "Game Mode". This bypasses image processing that adds input lag โ often reducing it from 60ms to under 10ms.
-
2
Connect via ethernet cable
Plug the PS4 or PS5 directly into your router. This is the single biggest improvement for online gaming.
-
3
Run a network test on PlayStation
Settings โ Network โ Test Internet Connection. Note the download speed, upload speed, and NAT type.
-
4
Change DNS settings
Settings โ Network โ Set Up Internet Connection โ Custom. At the DNS screen, set Primary to 8.8.8.8 and Secondary to 8.8.4.4.
-
5
Change MTU settings
In network setup, set MTU to 1473. This can improve connection stability on some UK broadband connections.

6
Check PSN status
