How to Fix Mould on Walls
Mould on walls is common in UK homes, especially in winter. It is caused by condensation and poor ventilation and can be treated effectively if caught early.
Likely causes
- Poor ventilation in bathrooms or kitchens
- Cold external walls causing condensation
- Drying clothes indoors without ventilation
- Leaking pipes or roof causing damp
- Inadequate heating โ cold surfaces attract moisture
Step-by-step fix
-
1
Protect yourself first
Wear rubber gloves, a face mask (FFP2 or higher), and old clothes. Mould spores are harmful if inhaled.
-
2
Make a cleaning solution
Mix one part white vinegar with one part water in a spray bottle, or use a purpose-made mould removal spray (such as HG Mould Spray, available from B&Q).
-
3
Spray and leave for 15 minutes
Apply generously to the mouldy area and leave it to work. Do not rinse immediately.
-
4
Scrub and wipe clean
Use an old cloth or sponge to scrub the mould. Bag and bin the cloth โ do not wash and reuse it.
-
5
Apply anti-mould paint or primer
Once the area is clean and dry (allow 24-48 hours), apply anti-mould paint. Dulux and Ronseal make good options available at most DIY stores.
-
6
Address the root cause
Ventilate the room better โ open windows, use extractor fans, and consider a dehumidifier. Mould will return unless you fix the underlying moisture problem.
