How to Fix a Dripping Tap Quickly
A dripping tap is easy to fix yourself. The most common cause in UK homes is a worn washer or ceramic cartridge.
Likely causes
- Worn rubber washer
- Worn ceramic cartridge disc
- Damaged O-ring
- Corroded valve seat
Step-by-step fix
-
1
Turn off the water supply
Use the isolation valve under the sink or the main stopcock.
-
2
Open the tap to drain water
Let remaining water drain out before disassembly.
-
3
Remove the tap handle and headgear
Unscrew the handle, then use an adjustable spanner to unscrew the headgear (the internal mechanism).
-
4
Inspect and replace the washer
The washer is at the bottom of the headgear. Remove it and fit an identical replacement.
-
5
Reassemble and test
Reassemble in reverse, turn the water back on slowly, and check the drip has stopped.
