How to Fix a Leaking Tap
A dripping tap wastes thousands of litres of water per year. In most cases, fixing it involves replacing a washer or cartridge โ a straightforward DIY task.
Likely causes
- Worn rubber washer (traditional taps)
- Worn ceramic disc cartridge (modern taps)
- Damaged O-ring on the tap body
- Corroded valve seat
- Loose packing nut
Step-by-step fix
-
1
Turn off the water supply
Turn off the isolation valve under the sink (flat-head screwdriver, quarter turn). If there is none, turn off the main stopcock, usually under the kitchen sink.
-
2
Turn on the tap to release pressure
Open the leaking tap to drain any remaining water in the pipe.
-
3
Remove the tap handle
Most tap handles have a decorative cap hiding a screw. Remove the cap, undo the screw, and pull off the handle.
-
4
Remove and inspect the washer or cartridge
Traditional taps have a rubber washer at the bottom of the spindle. Modern taps use a ceramic cartridge. Take the old part to a plumber's merchant or B&Q to match the replacement.
-
5
Fit the new washer or cartridge
Replace the part, reassemble the tap in reverse order, and hand-tighten (do not over-tighten).
-
6
Turn the water back on and test
Slowly reopen the isolation valve and check for leaks.
