How to Fix Condensation on Windows
Condensation on windows is extremely common in UK homes, especially in winter. It is caused by humid air meeting cold glass. Left untreated, it leads to mould.
Likely causes
- Humid air from cooking, washing, and breathing
- Poorly ventilated rooms
- Single glazing or cold window frames
- Drying clothes indoors
- Insufficient heating keeping walls and windows cold
Step-by-step fix
-
1
Ventilate daily
Open windows for 10-15 minutes each morning to let humid air out. Even in winter, brief ventilation makes a significant difference.
-
2
Use extractor fans
Always use the extractor fan when cooking or showering, and leave it on for 15 minutes afterwards.
-
3
Do not dry clothes indoors without ventilation
Clothes drying indoors adds a huge amount of moisture to the air. If you must dry indoors, open a window or use a dehumidifier nearby.
-
4
Use a dehumidifier
In badly affected rooms, a dehumidifier will actively remove moisture from the air. Units from Meaco or EcoAir are popular for UK homes.
-
5
Improve window insulation
Secondary glazing film, thermal curtains, or upgrading to double glazing reduces cold glass surfaces that attract condensation.
-
6
Wipe condensation daily
Wipe condensation from window sills every morning and dry the cloth โ do not leave water sitting on wood or plasterboard.
