How to Fix a Blocked Drain
A blocked drain is one of the most common household problems. In most cases, you can clear it without calling a plumber.
Likely causes
- Hair and soap scum build-up (bathroom)
- Food debris and grease (kitchen)
- Foreign objects dropped into the drain
- Root intrusion in outdoor drains
- Build-up in the U-bend (trap)
Step-by-step fix
-
1
Try a plunger first
Block any overflow holes with a cloth, fill the basin with enough water to cover the plunger cup, and plunge vigorously 10-15 times.
-
2
Remove and clean the drain cover
Many bathroom drains have a pop-up plug or removable cover. Remove it and clear any hair or debris with your fingers or a hooked wire.
-
3
Use a drain snake or flexiwire
A flexible drain rod (ยฃ5-15 from B&Q) can break up blockages deeper in the pipe.
-
4
Clean the U-bend
Place a bucket under the U-shaped pipe under the sink. Unscrew the end caps (most are hand-tight) and remove the blockage manually. Refit and test.
-
5
Use bicarbonate of soda and vinegar
Pour half a cup of bicarbonate of soda down the drain, followed by half a cup of white vinegar. Cover and leave for 30 minutes, then flush with hot water.
-
6
Use a commercial drain unblocker
Products like Mr Muscle Power Gel can dissolve organic blockages. Follow the instructions. Avoid very strong acid or caustic unblockers in old pipework.
