How to Fix Windscreen Wipers Not Working
Wiper problems range from worn blades to blown fuses. Most are simple and inexpensive to fix.
Likely causes
- Worn or damaged wiper blades
- Blown wiper fuse
- Ice or debris jamming the wiper mechanism
- Faulty wiper motor
- Wiper linkage disconnected
Step-by-step fix
-
1
Check and replace the wiper blades
Lift the wiper arm away from the screen. Most blades clip off and on easily. New blades cost ยฃ5-20 and are available from Halfords or any petrol station.
-
2
Check the fuse
Check your car's fuse box diagram (in the owner's manual or inside the fuse box cover) for the wiper fuse. Replace a blown fuse with one of the same amperage.
-
3
Clear ice or debris
Never operate wipers on a frozen screen โ this can blow the fuse or damage the motor. Clear all ice first.
-
4
Check the wiper arm tension
If blades are new but not clearing the screen, the wiper arm spring may be weak and not pressing the blade firmly enough.
-
5
Test the wiper motor
If nothing works after checking the fuse and blades, the wiper motor may have failed. This requires a mechanic.
