How to Fix Squeaky Brakes
Squeaky brakes are annoying but are not always a sign of danger. However, some types of brake squeak do indicate a problem that needs attention.
Likely causes
- Brake pads worn to the wear indicator (built-in squealer)
- Morning squeak from surface rust (usually harmless)
- Glazed brake discs or pads
- Debris caught between pad and disc
- Cheap or incorrect brake pads
Step-by-step fix
-
1
Establish when it squeaks
Does it squeak only in the morning and then stop? That is normal surface rust burning off. Does it squeak every time you brake? That needs investigation.
-
2
Listen for metallic grinding
Grinding (not squeaking) means the pad material is completely worn and metal is contacting metal. This is urgent โ stop driving and get the brakes replaced immediately.
-
3
Check brake pad thickness
Look through the wheel spokes. Brake pads should be at least 3mm thick. Below 2mm they must be replaced.
-
4
Check for debris
Small stones or grit can get lodged between the pad and disc. Sometimes driving and braking normally clears this.
-
5
Have the brakes inspected
If the squeak is persistent and not just the morning rust issue, have a mechanic inspect the pads and discs.
