How to Fix a Car That Is Overheating
An overheating engine is a serious warning. Pull over safely and do not continue driving โ engine damage from overheating can be catastrophically expensive.
Likely causes
- Low coolant level
- Faulty thermostat stuck closed
- Leaking coolant hose
- Blown head gasket
- Failing water pump
- Blocked radiator
Step-by-step fix
-
1
Pull over safely and turn off the engine
Do not continue driving. Stop as soon as it is safe to do so. Turn off the engine and wait at least 30 minutes before opening the bonnet.
-
2
Do NOT open the radiator cap when hot
The cooling system is pressurised. Opening it when hot will cause scalding fluid to spray out. Wait until everything is cool to the touch.
-
3
Check the coolant level
When cool, check the coolant reservoir. If low, top it up with the correct coolant mixture (50/50 antifreeze and water). A low level indicates a leak.
-
4
Check for visible coolant leaks
Look under the car for puddles (usually pink, green, or blue liquid). Check hoses for cracks or loose clips.
-
5
Call for breakdown assistance
If the car overheats again after topping up, or if you cannot see an obvious cause, call your breakdown provider rather than risking further damage.
-
6
Have the cooling system pressure tested
A garage can pressure test the system to find leaks. A blown head gasket is serious โ look for white smoke from the exhaust or oil in the coolant reservoir.
